Sania vs India, Score: Love All

Sania Mirza is once again the top headline maker across all newspapers & news channels. But its not because of her exploits on the tennis court, but because of her ‘court’ship with a certain Pakistani. And trust me on this, there was no other way I could see Sania claiming the headlines in the near future. Her tennis career is following the same career graph as that of Ram Gopal Verma. Some years ago she was amongst the top 30 odd women players but currently she stands on the verge of being knocked out of the top 100. That’s majorly due to the absence of fitness and continuous focus.

One thing to be noted is that Sania is not new to making news the wrong way – first the issue over her wearing a short skirt on court, then putting her feet near the national flag at a press conference & finally her broken engagement. So this latest episode doesn’t come up as a real surprise to me. And as usual all the people in India who don’t have much to do all day, jumped on to oppose something that is nothing more than a personal family issue. It’s a shame that a decisionĀ  as personal as selecting your life partner, becomes a issue of national discussion! And Sania being a Muslim & a celebrity are the prime reasons behind the added interest. Would anyone care so much if a little known girl from a village in India married a little known guy from across the border – Don’t think so!

Firstly there’s this issue of the India-Pakistan angle. Any individual has the right to choose his life partner of his choice as per the constitution of this country. And the constitution doesn’t specify any nationalities which are an exception to this rule. Then I don’t know why should anyone have a problem with that. Sania hasn’t asked the Thackrey’s to give their blessings to Shoaib at their wedding! But yet, they have to make an issue out of it and vent their ire. Second – there is the issue as to which nationality will Sania represent after marriage. As per my common sense, she would be a Pakistani as per marriage laws. And so be it! Ours is a country that celebrates the achievements of golfer Vijay Singh (a Fiji national), director M Night Shymalan (a US national) & of Slumdog Millionaire (directed by a UK national) only because they have some connections to India. Then why should we feel awkward in cheering Sania Mirza when she plays tennis in the future. On one side we want to improve the Indo-Pak relations and the other side we condemn Indo-Pak (marital) relations. Hypocritical India at its best!

The only grudge personally is that there are millions of single Indians like me who would have given their life to get married to Sania šŸ˜‰ Then why the hell she had to cross the border for that! But jokes aside, it feels too good that a girl is doing what she wants and not caring a damn about the world! As long as both families approve, don’t see anything wrong in it!

And Sania seems to have declared the start of her marital match with Shoaib, in the same way asĀ a tennis referee at the start of a tennis match – LOVE ALL!

Until the next time a cross border marriage makes the headlines……

Cheers~~
